Today is National Science Day. The theme for National Science Day 2025 is “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for VIKSIT BHARAT.”
The day is a celebrated in recognition of physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman’s contributions to science and technology. While working in the laboratory of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, Raman made his most significant breakthrough – the inelastic scattering of photons by molecules.
Later named the Raman Effect, the discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Indian to receive this prestigious award. Raman spectroscopy is founded on the Raman effect. The Raman effect is the interaction of light with molecules that causes a change in their vibrational energy. The application of Raman effect is Raman spectroscopy.
Application of Raman Effect
Raman spectroscopy is a type of vibrational spectroscopy that allows for the simple interpretation and very sensitive structural identification of trace amounts of substances based on their distinctive vibrational properties.
Raman spectroscopy, which is based on the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light with the sample. Because of the inelastic scattering, the resultant light will have a different frequency than the incident light.
Raman spectroscopy is based on the Raman effect and has applications in many areas of science, including nanotechnology to study the structure of nanowires, biology, and medicine to study low-frequency DNAs and proteins, and chemistry to study the structure of molecules and their bonds.
Because of its diagnostic potential, Raman spectroscopy has become a commonly utilized instrument in biomedical engineering and life science. It is used in medical research to examine the biochemical environment of single cells or to monitor cell reactions to medications, as well as in the pharmaceutical sector for process and quality control in drug manufacturing.
Science Day 2025 theme
National Science Day 2025 theme is to “emphasize the role of young minds in driving India’s scientific and technological progress, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which aims for a developed and self-reliant India.”
Science Day is celebrated as one of the main science festivals in India. Broad objectives of the celebrations are ‘To widely spread a message about the significance of scientific applications in the daily lives of people, to display all the activities, efforts, and achievements in the field of science for the welfare of human beings, to discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development of science and to encourage the people as well as popularize science and technology.
Open Day at IISc
As part of Science Day the Indian Institute of Science hold ‘Open Day’ at its campus in Bengaluru. It is an annual event showcasing the Institute’s research activities and facilities to the student community and the general public. This year it will be held on Saturday,1 March, from 9 am to 5 pm.
On this day, students, science and technology enthusiasts and the public will have an opportunity to visit the Institute and go around the campus to explore the exciting science and technology initiatives and activities at the Institute. Open Day will feature popular lectures, experimental demos, poster presentations, quiz contests, scientific competitions, and exhibitions that will be showcased in various departments and centres.
Not to be missed is “Kids-Zone”. It will offer a special attraction for all the younger students, with a number of science and technology demos will be on display.
Entry to the Open day is free and the institute encourage you to register for the event for individuals as well as institutions.
If you are unable to register for some reason, you are still welcome to visit the IISc campus on the Open Day. There will be as many as 13 help desks offering help, advice, and directions to assist visitors in easily navigating within the IISc campus. These help desks provide information about live demos, lectures, experiments, etc. Garbage collection bins also kept near all the help desks.
Many sophisticated scientific equipment and facilities will be displayed with live demos. Visitors will have the opportunity to see many such facilities and how they are utilised for research.
Visitors can interact with faculty members, students and research scholars. Popular lecture demos will also be conducted on selected subjects.
There will be a number of food stalls spread across the campus serving a variety of menus along with drinking water. But the institute requests all to bring their own bottles and tumblers/cups to fill water from these drinking water facilities. No paper cups or plastic bottles will be provided. Only stainless-steel glasses will be available at the water dispensing stations. There are Bio toilets available at 20 places across the campus. To facilitate public, E-rickshaws will be available for the elderly and children.
Detailed information is available in the Open Day e-Brochure. Please visit website https://openday.iisc.ac.in for more information.
What is Kids Zone?
It is a platform for basic school level science experiments demonstrated by IISc students from various departments under one roof. It was one of the most popular events of the previous six Open days. It is a collective effort to intrigue curiosity in young minds. Last year 20 departments came together with around 60 experiments. We invite kids to visit Kids Zone and enjoy the fun of science.
Follow Guidelines
Given the massive demand for Kids Zone since the last six Open Days, for the convenience of students visiting and smooth management of the crowd, here are the guidelines that will be followed on the event day for Kids Zone 2025
